b.1987, Kenya. Billy Mutai is a freelance news and documentary photographer currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. He is interested in climate change, ethnicity, human rights, religion and conflict around these subject areas.
Billy graduated from Egerton University, Kenya – B.A Communication & Media before beginning his career at Kenya Times and later joined Nation Media Group where he covered high-demanding photography assignments among them terror attacks in Nairobi and Northern part of Kenya, travelled to Kismayu and Mogadishu in Somalia to document Al Shabaab terror cell activities.
In 2013, Billy covered International Criminal Court proceedings at The Hague, Netherlands where current Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta with his deputy William Ruto were indicted of crimes against humanity preceding 2007/08 post election violence in Kenya.
Away from mainstream media, Billy has taken up assignments from development agencies, NGO’s and has completed personal projects.
He has been published at The Ground Truth Project (US), Anadolu Agency (Turkey), VoxMedia (US), This is Africa (Africa/Netherlands), The East African, Daily Nation (Kenya), Journalists for African Development (Kenya) among others. He contributes for SOPA Images (Hong Kong) and Getty Images.
